A war that will fuel her. A bond that will destroy her.

Emelina Flores has come home to Ruina. After rescuing her sister, Olivia, from imprisonment in rival kingdom Lera, Em and Olivia together vow to rebuild Ruina to its former glory.

But just because Em and Olivia are out of Lera doesn’t mean they are safe. Their actions over the past year have had consequences, and they are now targets of retaliation. Olivia will destroy everyone who acts against Ruina. Em isn’t as sure.

Ever since Em posed as Prince Casimir’s betrothed in Lera, she’s started to see another side to this war. Lera may have destroyed the Ruined for decades, but Em knows that Cas is different. And now that he’s taken the throne, Em believes a truce is within reach. But Olivia suspects that Em’s romantic feelings for Cas are just coloring her judgement.

Em is determined to bring peace to her home. But when winning the war could mean betraying her family, she faces an impossible choice between loyalty and love. Em must stay one step ahead of her enemies—and her blood—before she’s the next victim in this battle for sovereignty.

I have a series of emotions going through my head.

Avenged was overall a good book. This is the second installment in the Ruined trilogy.

Avenged focused on Olivia. Olivia Flores, remember her? Emelina Flores’s little sister, the girl that got captured by Lera due to her ruined powers, which was considered “dangerous.” Ring a bell?

Not really?

Exactly, If you did not read it immediately after the first book, it WILL get confusing .

The characters were too complicated, the plot and the general setting will be confusing if you do not read the first book again. So therefore I read the first book again. If you don’t want to bother reading the first book, let me give you a brief summary.

Well, so the first book was mainly based on Emelina impostoring Mary to marry Prince Casimir, hopefully gaining information about Olivia’s whereabouts. Her plan was to kill the Royal family afterwards.

Well, about that…. She fell in love with Prince Casimir (who by the way was definitely a guy worth swooning over) , found where her sister was, almost killed Cas in the process, rescued Olivia…who with a year pent up in the cells were filled with anguish and hate toward people that hate the ruined, as well as humans in general. Which is not good.

So yea, OH,  and Casimirs’ mother and father died, in a gruesome way thanks to Olivia ripping off their body parts with her power. Cas almost dies but survives, and runs into Emelina, they talk…blah blah blah.
Okay, got it?

Avenged was a surprising second book. It revolved completely around Olivia. Her and Emelina, building a better world for the Ruined. And oh my goodness, how much I hate Olivia. Olivia’s powers expanded, and was able to control them  and cause bigger damage. It was not a likable characteristic of her. THIS GIRL ENJOYS RIPPING THE HEARTS OUT OF PEOPLES BODY!!

Nope, definitely not my favorite character. Olivia was crazy and out of control. I mean, at first I get it, she is taking the revengeful path due to her past and everything. But then she started to kill innocent people, using them as practice dummies. Not cool, Olivia.

Anyways, Avenged had three perspectives. Aren, Emelina, and Olivia. I really was hoping to see more of Emelina, but unlike the first book she did not appear strong, her logic was muddled with her feelings. For example, she knew Olivia was going crazy, but her excuse for not doing anything was, oh she’s my sister…oh its not that bad…until it was too late. Until she witnessed Olivia become truly a monster at the end of the book. She devises a plan…and the end.

The book made me want to tear my hair off. Olivia was annoying, so was her thoughts. Quite disturbing honestly. Here, let me represent her thoughts 24/7 with a iconic gif.

Anyways, Cas and Emelina barely got any screen time. Aren and Iria…were just present but not all present.

What I did enjoy was the rush of surprisingly weird twist, which in my opinion is a factor that makes a good book. Emelina and Cas were just adorable and I liked to see the different groups unite. Somewhat. You’ll understand.

This book was not quite as good as the first book, but I was still hanging on every word. It was really interesting to read and I might admit, a pretty original book.
I am super excited to read the next installment, and I’m hopimg to see Olivia dead, and Aren, Iria, Cas and Em deserving more screen time. Really curious to see the final book for the Ruined series.
